Suspected Thugs Stop Peter Obi From Visiting Yelewata in Benue

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, was prevented from visiting Yelewata in Benue State on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after suspected thugs blocked his convoy.

Obi had reportedly arrived at Makurdi Airport and was travelling with members of the NDC entourage along the Makurdi–Gboko highway when the group encountered a roadblock near the Nigerian Air Force Base.

Videos from the incident showed a crowd confronting the convoy and chanting, “Peter Obi, go back!” The vehicles eventually turned around as police officers attempted to control the situation.

Obi was heading to Yelewata to sympathise with families affected by the deadly June 2025 attack and meet displaced residents of the community. Channels Television and Premium Times reported the incident.

Reacting, Obi criticised the alleged use of disadvantaged young people to obstruct political opponents. He said it was troubling that people suffering from poverty, insecurity and marginalisation could be recruited as instruments of political intimidation.

Obi added that his entourage decided not to force its way through the blockade to avoid confrontation and protect the lives of those present. He also called on security agencies to guarantee every Nigerian’s freedom of movement.

Unverified reports circulated online alleging that the youths were acting on the instructions of the Benue State Government. However, Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration strongly denied any involvement, describing the allegation as unfounded and stating that it had not been formally informed of Obi’s visit.

The incident has generated criticism from commentators who argued that Nigerians have a constitutional right to travel freely across the country, although visits involving prominent political figures may require coordination with security agencies.
