The Nigeria Police Force has raised a nationwide security alert following intelligence reports suggesting that terrorist groups may be planning coordinated attacks on churches, schools, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations across the country.
The warning was reportedly contained in an internal communication issued by the Force’s Department of Operations on September 13, 2026, and circulated to police commands and specialised formations nationwide. The alert identified parts of the North-East, North-West, North-Central and South-West as areas requiring increased security attention.
According to the communication, security intelligence indicated the movement of armed individuals from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State. The police also expressed concern over alleged reconnaissance activities by suspected ISWAP operatives and their local associates around potential targets.
The Force warned that schools could face heightened risks as the 2026/2027 academic session gets underway, given the large number of students and staff expected to return to educational institutions. It also raised concerns that terrorist groups could attempt to exploit the security situation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In response, police commands were directed to strengthen surveillance, patrols, access-control measures, stop-and-search operations and emergency response capabilities around vulnerable facilities.
Commissioners of Police were also instructed to tighten security along borders, major entry and exit routes and other strategic locations.
The police further called for closer cooperation among security agencies, school authorities, religious leaders and NYSC officials to improve intelligence sharing and establish stronger early-warning systems.
Commanders were directed to immediately address identified security weaknesses and report credible threats through established channels.
The Force urged personnel and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious individuals, vehicles, movements or objects to the appropriate authorities.
