Nigerian disc jockey, music star and philanthropist Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has opened up about her evolving identity, describing music as a source of healing while reflecting on her journey towards living more authentically.
The entertainer, who recently unveiled a new look on social media, said she is gradually freeing herself from the expectations and perceptions that have shaped her public image over the years.
Cuppy, known for her colourful fashion and distinctive pink-themed persona, said she has reached a stage where she is more focused on embracing her true self rather than maintaining an image for public approval.
According to her, music has remained a deeply personal part of her life and a powerful means of communication and healing.
Beyond entertainment, Cuppy has also expanded her influence through education, philanthropy and advocacy, using her platform and the Cuppy Foundation to support vulnerable children and champion causes affecting young people across Africa and beyond.
She stressed that true philanthropy should go beyond temporary acts of giving, noting that lasting impact and sustainable change are more important measures of service. For Cuppy, privilege carries a responsibility to create opportunities and improve the lives of others.
Reflecting on the challenges of growing up in the public eye, the entertainer admitted that she once struggled to separate the public character of “Cuppy” from Florence, the person behind the celebrity image.
She said the pressure to consistently live up to the colourful persona she created eventually made her question how much of it truly represented who she was.
Cuppy said her current transformation represents a personal liberation, as she is now determined to live without constantly seeking approval or apologising for her choices.
With a renewed focus on TV purpose, impact and authenticity, the entertainer appears set to continue redefining her place in music, philanthropy and public life.
