Africa Producers Lab
Nollywood actress and producer Etta JoMaria has been selected as one of seven finalists for the British Council Film Lab Africa 2 Producers Lab, emerging from a highly competitive pool of more than 1,000 applicants from across Africa.
The Producers Lab, organised in partnership with EbonyLife Creative Academy and Iconic Steps, is a major component of Film Lab Africa 2, the British Council’s film and television development programme aimed at supporting emerging African filmmakers through professional training, mentorship and project development.
Reacting to her selection, JoMaria described the opportunity as both encouraging and transformative, noting that the programme has expanded her understanding of the role of a producer beyond administrative responsibilities.
According to her, the training has strengthened her knowledge of creativity in movie production and improved her ability to work closely with writers, directors and other members of a production team in developing screen projects.
She said the experience had also given her greater confidence in making creative and strategic decisions, while helping her become more intentional about the kinds of stories she wants to bring to audiences.
JoMaria added that one of the most important lessons she has gained from the programme is understanding the producer as both a creative and strategic force responsible for connecting the story, audience, creative team and practical realities of production.
The actress and producer said the experience has further reinforced her commitment to telling authentic African stories that reflect the continent’s realities while maintaining the potential to connect with audiences around the world.
