Mohbad: Police Approve Fresh Investigation Into Singer’s Death

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The development followed a petition submitted by the singer’s family, seeking a comprehensive reinvestigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, the petition was submitted to the Inspector-General of Police on April 14, 2026, and received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.

The family raised concerns about what it described as inconsistencies in the earlier investigative process and requested a comprehensive forensic review of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

The lawyer said the Inspector-General approved the petition and directed the Lagos State Police Command to take action. The case has reportedly been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.

A representative of the Aloba family has already met with the new investigative team, while the family says it remains available to provide documents, witnesses and other information that may assist the investigation. (Punch Newspapers)

The development comes shortly after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate case seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death.

However, the family’s lawyer stressed that the court case was separate from the petition submitted by the family and that its dismissal did not terminate the police investigation arising from the family’s petition. (Premium Times Nigeria)

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His death generated widespread public attention and led to investigations, including a coroner’s inquest and an autopsy.

The latest investigation is ongoing, and the outcome has not yet been established.

The Aloba family has called for a credible, comprehensive and transparent process, while stressing that it does not intend to prejudge the outcome of the investigation.

The police have yet to publicly provide detailed findings from the fresh investigation
