Amos Dangut assumes office as WAEC Registra/CEO

Nigerian education administrator and scholar, Amos Dangut, has officially assumed duty as the new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Dangut took over the leadership of the regional examination body on October 1, 2026, becoming the 14th Registrar of WAEC. His appointment, which was previously approved by the Council’s International Governing Board, runs for five years and will end in September 2031.

He succeeds Pateh Bah of The Gambia.
Before his new appointment, Dangut served as the Head of WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria, a position he assumed in October 2023. His appointment as Registrar was ratified at the Council’s 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut has an extensive academic background. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture with specialisation in Animal Production, a Master’s degree and PhD in Animal Science, as well as a Master’s degree in Education Administration and Planning.

His career in education began in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a teacher and WAEC examiner. He joined WAEC in 1998 and subsequently occupied several senior positions across the organisation, including roles in test development, examination security, branch administration, post-examination services and zonal coordination.

Over the years, Dangut has been involved in the development and administration of examinations, with WAEC highlighting his use of technology to improve the council’s operations. As Head of the National Office, he was associated with initiatives including the computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), serialisation of examination papers and the Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also played a role in the development and implementation of digital services such as the WAEC Digital Certificate Portal, E-Study Platform and Digital Records Archive, as well as systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.

WAEC described Dangut as an experienced administrator with expertise in test development, examination administration and management of its branch and zonal offices. The council also noted his involvement in education policy and his service on the governing boards of institutions including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB).

An academic and author, Dangut has published research papers in national and international journals and participated in conferences and education forums. He also serves as the West African Sub-region’s representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
With his assumption of office, Dangut becomes the latest Nigerian to lead WAEC, which oversees major examinations across several West African countries.
