The Lagos State Government has advised residents living in 13 identified flood-prone and low-lying communities to relocate to safer, higher ground following a fresh flood warning issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA).
NiHSA’s latest alert indicates that Lagos could experience heavy rainfall and possible flooding between September 19 and 25, 2026. The state government consequently urged residents in vulnerable locations to take precautionary measures before the situation worsens.
The areas identified include Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah, Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront Jetty, Isheri North, Jetty Terminal B, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto and parts of Agboyi.
The government noted that communities situated along the Ogun River and other major waterways could face increased flooding as rising water levels from upstream areas may flow downstream into vulnerable communities.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, advised residents to act promptly rather than wait until floodwaters begin entering their homes before relocating.
Residents were also warned against attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges or areas with strong currents, either on foot or in vehicles, due to the dangers associated with fast-moving floodwater.
The state government further appealed to residents to keep drainage channels, canals and waterways free of refuse, stressing that indiscriminate waste disposal can obstruct the free flow of water and worsen flooding in affected communities.
